Short-stay limits

ETIAS and the 90/180-day rule: short-stay planning.

The main trap is treating ETIAS validity as permission to stay continuously. It is not.

Short answer

ETIAS, once live, does not replace the short-stay limit. The official ETIAS material describes short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period and says border checks still apply.

  • Track days across the relevant countries.
  • Do not treat multi-year ETIAS validity as a long-stay permission.
  • Use visa or residence routes for plans outside short-stay travel.

Independent, source-led guidance

ETIAS Connect is independent and not the official EU ETIAS website. Use this page to prepare questions, then verify timing-sensitive decisions against official sources.

Why this needs care

A traveller can misunderstand ETIAS validity and accidentally plan a trip that exceeds the short-stay framework.

Private in-browser planning utility

90/180-day stay calculator

Enter up to eight previous stays and one proposed stay. The calculation runs only in this browser and neither the dates nor the result are stored or sent to analytics.

Previous short stays

Leave the first row blank if there were no previous stays.

Proposed stay

Scope: this simplified planner applies the general rolling calculation only. Residence permits, long-stay visas, bilateral arrangements, Cyprus, and country-specific circumstances can require a different assessment. The European Commission says its own calculator is a helping tool and competent authorities make the final decision.

Decision path

Work through the question in order

1

Count actual days

Arrival and departure patterns matter more than the label on the authorisation.

2

Separate authorisation from stay length

ETIAS may be valid longer than any single permitted stay.

3

Escalate longer plans

Work, residence, or long study plans need a different route.

Practical guidance

Repeated trips

Multiple short trips still need to be counted against the short-stay framework.

Border discretion

An authorisation does not guarantee entry if the stay pattern creates concerns.

Avoid these shortcuts

Mistakes that create avoidable risk

Reading validity as stay permission

Three-year validity does not mean three years of continuous stay.

Counting only one country

Short-stay calculations can apply across a wider travel area, not just one city.

When to verify directly

Use official sources before acting

  • The trip is close to the 90-day limit.
  • The traveller has recent Europe stays.
  • The plan involves study, work, residence, or repeated long visits.

Common questions

Does ETIAS reset the 90/180-day rule?+

No. ETIAS does not extend or reset the short-stay framework.

Is ETIAS enough for a semester abroad?+

Not by itself. Longer study may require a visa or residence route.
