Decision-time guide

ETIAS processing time: minutes, 96 hours, and extended review

ETIAS is not processing applications yet. Once open, official guidance expects most applications to be handled within minutes and routine decisions no later than 96 hours after submission. A case that needs additional information or an interview can take longer, with the official process describing extended windows of up to 30 days. These are process windows, not an individual guarantee.

How the future processing timeline is expected to branch

The clock depends on whether the automated and manual checks can decide the case without more information.

Fast path
Many applications are expected to receive an outcome within minutes.
Routine review
A decision is expected no later than 96 hours after submission.
Information request
The traveller may be asked for additional information or documentation and must follow the deadline in the request.
Interview route
A national unit may request an interview; the complete process can extend toward the published 30-day window.

A safer travel-planning rule

Do not plan around the fastest expected outcome once applications open.

  • Apply well before departure through the verified official route.
  • Monitor the application email, including spam folders, for requests and decisions.
  • Keep the reference available but never publish it or share it with an unverified helper.
  • Do not assume a booking, boarding pass, or paid intermediary shortens official review.

If an application later appears pending

The post-launch path must follow the official message and competent national authority, not a generic countdown.

  • Confirm the application was submitted through the official route.
  • Read the exact email status and response deadline.
  • Check whether extra information or an interview was requested.
  • Use the official contact or appeal route named in the notice.

Why a current processing claim is a warning sign

Because the system is closed, there is no legitimate live ETIAS processing queue today.

A message claiming your official ETIAS is pending before launch should be treated as a provider-verification and payment-safety issue.
